NDIS Information, Linkages and Capacity Building Framework: the next steps

On 16 September 2015, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Premier Daniel Andrews signed the bilateral agreement outlining the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Victoria from 1 July 2016. This historic agreement will more than double the funding currently allocated to disability services to benefit an estimated 105,000 Victorians and aims to give these Victorians greater choice and control of the services they require.

Creating an inclusive education system for students with additional health and development needs

Access to and success in education is critical in eliminating disadvantage and giving every child the opportunity to reach their full potential.  All children and young people, including those with disabilities, have a right to quality education. Yet too many students with disabilities or with additional health and development needs are being denied the opportunities afforded by a quality education.

2015-16 State Budget Snapshot: Create communities inclusive of people with disability

VCOSS and the community sector strongly support the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the additional funding accompanying it. The 2015-16 Victorian State Budget’s continued investment in the NDIS trial site in Barwon is welcome.

Taxi reform: the next steps

The Victorian taxi industry is facing a shake-up from reforms stemming from the Victorian Taxi Industry Inquiry. Now that the Victorian Government has responded, the real task will be the long process of implementation, which will need further consultation and investigation by the new Taxi Services Commission, headed up by former ACCC Chairman, Graeme Samuel.

Access to train stations: more than ramps and lifts

Making public transport accessible is more than an argument about ramps and lifts at train stations. While the very real problems of train station design has been highlighted by stranded passengers at stations with frequent lift failures – and no ramps – the real problem is more complicated, and more deeply entrenched in the way we think about  public transport, and how we design for it.
