Energy reforms require careful consideration

VCOSS statement regarding the Victorian Government’s formal response to the Review of Electricity and Gas Retail Markets in Victoria.

These remarks are attributable to VCOSS CEO Emma King:

The Victorian Government is right to take the time and think carefully about energy price regulation.

Rushing these reforms and getting them wrong won’t help anybody.

We need to make sure price regulation actually benefits those people doing it tough in Victoria.

Victorians have been battered by steep energy price hikes for the past decade, and VCOSS is pleased at the formal adoption of the majority of reforms recommended in the Thwaites-Mulder review.

These reforms are a fundamental part of the battle-plan for bringing down prices.

Energy retailers have confused people for too long. Dodgy marketing and tricky contracts mean most people are paying more than they need to for power.

The reforms will tackle these damaging tactics head-on, forcing retailers to market their deals in actual dollar terms (not confusing discounts), and putting more of an onus on retailers to help people get the best deals.
