What happens once I complete the check?

Once all registered users have completed BOARDcheck and FINANCEcheck, we will collate and analyse the responses and produce a detailed report.
This report identifies areas your governance can improve and provides appropriate resources to get you started.
Recommended actions will be broken down by urgency, with those requiring ‘Immediate Attention’ listed first.
Items are also labelled by subject area, for example ‘Risk’ or ‘Composition’. We strongly recommend you read this report at a board level.
The Good Governance Health Check only provides a general indication of the health of your organisation’s governance. It is not an exhaustive list of all aspects of good governance nor is it an exhaustive audit.
It’s recommended you run the Health Check annually to assess and monitor your progress.
The Good Governance Health Check is an initiative of the Victorian Council or Social Service, made possible with support from the Helen Smith McPherson Trust.

What is ‘Good Governance’?

There are many definitions of ‘Good Governance’ however for the purposes of this tool it may be defined as the process of ensuring that an organisation acts in an ethical, lawful and just manner and uses the resources at its disposal in the most effective and efficient ways.
One of the most valuable asserts of a community service organisation is its reputation. Adhering to good governance principles and practices will ensure that your organisation will be known as a good and worthwhile community services agency.

What can the health check tool do?

This tool can help you assess the health and standards of your organisation’s governance. It is a self-assessment tool which will enable you to determine those areas of your organisation where governance is strong and those areas where improvements need to be made.
The Governance Health Check is a set of statements of good practice. For each statement, you need to consider the extent to which your organisation is achieving good practice. By the end of the Health Check you will be able to tell if the governance of your organisation is healthy and up-to-standard or not…and whether you need additional help.
You may also like to run the Health Check again after a year or two to assess and monitor your progress.

What can the Governance Health Check NOT do?

While there are some basic principles of good governance that every organisation should adopt, because of the differing sizes and complexities of community service organisations different levels of governance standards may be appropriate.
The Good Governance Health Check only provides a general indication of the health of your organisation’s governance. It is not an exhaustive list of all aspects of good governance nor is it an exhaustive audit.
