VCOSS welcomes free public transport
MEDIA RELEASE
VCOSS welcomes today’s announcement by the Victorian Government that public transport across the network will be free for a month from Tuesday 31 March.
VCOSS CEO Juanita Pope said:
“We’ve heard from our members that the rising cost of fuel caused by the war in the Middle East is putting extra strain on tight household budgets.”
“For many people who were already struggling to pay the rent, put food on the table and keep the lights on, the additional source of cost and worry is unmanageable. This new measure will help.”
“We applaud the Victorian Government for taking concrete action to support Victorians with the cost of living. Being able to access free public transport across the network will help many people get their kids to school and themselves to work, and ease one source of strain on household budgets. This is a very positive step.”
With inflationary pressures and rising costs continuing to be caused by the international situation, VCOSS looks forward to seeing other measures to ensure that Victorians who are doing it tough are not left behind. This includes increased support for the community services that people rely on, especially in difficult times.
VCOSS is the peak body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s premier social advocacy body.
We work towards a Victoria free from poverty and disadvantage, where every person and community experiences genuine wellbeing.
